The Anatolian Martyr Police Demet Sezen Vocational and Technical High School in Izmir, which has 4 training aircraft in its garden, is among the preferences of students with its “Aircraft Body Engine Maintenance” department, where graduates of the school can work as technicians in airlines.
Demet Sezen, one of the policemen who was founded in 1994 to provide training in the field of “electrical and electronic technology” in Selçuk district, later incorporated the departments “Garment Production Technology”, “Development and education of the child” and was martyred in the July 15, 2016 coup attempt. Since 2012, training has been provided in the school’s “Aircraft Body Engine Maintenance Area” where 600 students are educated.
In high school, which is the only school in the Aegean region that accepts students with a central examination in this area, in addition to theoretical training, students receive practical training in the “Cessna 172”, “Cessna 185” and two “Slingsby T67 Type Trainer Aircraft” and aircraft maintenance shop in the garden.
The students also make a name for themselves with the model airplanes they have developed in the workshops.
“Aviation Club” students Selman Kızıltoprak, Bayram Akan, Yiğit Ali Akın, İrfan Berk Akbaş and Anılcan Aykurt, finally won the first place in Turkey as a team in the “Tayyar Akça Turkey National Model Aircraft Free Flight Championship” organized in Ankara the previous month under the leadership of the International Federation of Aviation.
With the opportunity to do internships at domestic and international airlines and airports, students graduating from the school can easily find employment.
İbrahim Uçar, an aviation electronics teacher at the Anatolian Martyr Police Demet Sezen Vocational and Technical High School, told Anadolu Agency (AA) that there were aircraft maintenance areas only in 17 public schools. in Turkey and that it was an educational institution in the Aegean region of this area. Uçar pointed out that the area which gave its first graduates in 2016 and where 240 students in 8 classes are continuing their studies is the most popular department.
Noting that they have increased the quality of education in the department every year, Uçar made the following assessment:
“There are students who come to our school after passing exams from different cities in Turkey. Here, in addition to theoretical knowledge of aircraft maintenance, we provide practical training on today’s aircraft. Our children who graduate from here are trained to the level to become aircraft maintenance. After the training here, some students continue their undergraduate studies while others on the other hand apply to related companies in the aviation and start working.
Expressing that as an Aviation Club they managed to win the model aircraft competition championship this year, Uçar said:
“We have been working on model airplanes for about four years. We work with our students on designing model airplanes during after-school hours. Although we haven’t had much success with the airplanes we have made at the beginning, we have produced beautiful airplanes with the experience we have gained over time, and we have won the Turkish Free Flight Model Airplane Championship held annually in Ankara. also participated in the competition in 2019. Our students won the first place in Turkey in the competition held on October 9th this year. Their success is not a coincidence, of course, but a success due to their own work, their determination and putting forward something as a team. I hope that in the years to come, we will continue this success.
The students hope
Yiğit Ali Akın, a 12th grade student from Uşak, said he chose this school because he had been interested in airplanes since childhood.
Stating that his goal is to be selected for the National Model Airplane Team, Akın said, “We are trying to design model airplanes in addition to training here. We have been participating in competitions for 2 years with the products we design. My current goal is to be selected for the national team and represent my country abroad. After graduating from here, we are trying to design model cars. I had in college. I want to finish the department and become a technician. After that, I aim to be in good places.” mentioned.
İrfan Berk Akbaş, one of the students of the school whose family lives in Balıkesir, said that he likes dealing with airplanes and wants to progress in this field.
“I’ve been designing model airplanes since 9th grade. I had to take a break for a while due to the pandemic. We’re trying to progress through trial and error. We’re making the airplanes we’ve designed on average in 2 months. We came first in Turkey in the competition this year and we are very happy.”
