The Turks decided to visit relatives, not for vacation and entertainment.

As Eid al-Fitr approaches, millions of citizens who have made their plans well in advance are preparing to leave, even though the “bridge” of the holiday has not been extended to 9 days.

Musa Çaktır, board member of the Turkish Bus Drivers Federation (TOFED), said that the occupancy rate of intercity buses for the holiday period exceeded 70%. Turkish Travel Agencies Association (TÜRSAB) President Firuz Bağlıkaya said that this year, on the eve of May 1, which coincides with Sunday, and on the Ramadan holiday on May 2, 3 and 4 May, there is a 5 -day vacation opportunity with the weekend.

100% occupancy is expected

Stating that domestic demands are more intense during the Eid holiday, Bağlıkaya said, “We expect popular destinations and hotels to reach nearly 100% occupancy in the last week of Ramadan. Inquiries focused on destinations in the Aegean and Mediterranean region and Cyprus. organizers with artists. Hotels are more preferred. As for destinations, Alanya, Belek, Bodrum, Çeşme, Kemer, Marmaris and Kuşadası are among our main regions,” he said.

The year 2022 is of great significance for the tourism sector, which has gone through difficult times over the past 2 years due to coronavirus restrictions. With the lifting of restrictions, the aim is for domestic and international demand to return to the old days.

According to data from the facilities of the Ministry of Culture and Tourism, the number of beds in hotels with operating license and municipal certificate reached 1 million 639 thousand 626 in December 2021. Antalya ranks first with 608 thousand beds, followed by Istanbul with 218,000, Muğla with 178,000 and Izmir with 54,000.

This data means that 1.6 million people can stay in hotels at the same time in Turkey. Although the 100% occupancy rate is reached in some regions depending on the season, the full occupancy rate is never reached in Turkey. For example, although hotels on the south coast are full due to the holidays, almost all winter hotels are closed because the season is over.

According to TUIK data, 8 million 948 thousand citizens in the last quarter of 2021, 18 million 786 thousand in the third quarter, 8 million 995 thousand people in the second quarter and 6 million 995 thousand citizens in the first quarter of 2021. In other words, the number of people traveling is much higher than the hotel capacity. So where do travelers stay?

Number of travellers, trips and overnight stays, 2021:

According to TUIK data, the number of domestic trips last year was 52 million 774 thousand. This reflects the total number of trips, not individuals. In other words, if a person has traveled within the country, for example, 3 times during the year, these 3 times are reflected in the data.

In 33 million 346 thousand of these trips, 63.2% of them stayed with family or friends. On the other hand, the number of trips to hotel was 9 million 601 thousand and the number of trips to hostel was 1 million 457 thousand. The share of the number of trips staying in hotels and hostels in the total number of trips was 20.9%.
